Kuwaiti electricity and water minister Mohammad Al-Olaim has claimed his ministry will save KWD 1 billion (US $3.5 billion) of state funds by cancelling a part of the 2008 emergency power projects, the Kuwait News Agency (KUNA) has reported.
Al-Olaim, who is also acting oil minister, said the national initiative to conserve energy (Tarsheed) has so far saved the state US $78 million. He noted that this year’s lower level of electrical consumption was quite an achievement, compared to previous years, in light of the number of ongoing residential and industrial projects.
The ministry aspired to increase the ability of its current power stations, he said, adding that the ministry’s plan for 2008-2010 will include four projects in southern and northern Kuwait.
On the issue of alternative energy sources, such as solar power, Al-Olaim pointed out that solar costs six times more than regular power stations.
