Saudi Arabia, the world’s largest oil producer, has announced its intention to join the International Renewable Energy Agency (IRENA).The decision of Saudi Arabia to join Abu Dhabi-based IRENA was revealed by Helene Pelosse, the agency’s interim director general, and Dr Sultan Ahmed Al Jaber, the CEO of Masdar at a press conference.
Saudi Arabia will follow new members South Africa, the Kyrgyzstan and Saint Vincent and the Grenadines, news agency WAM reported.
The announcement was made at the third preparatory session of IRENA, which adopted a budget of $13.7m for the agency for 2010.
Al Jaber said in comments published by UAE daily Khaleej Times Saudi Arabia’s decision to join IRENA was indicative of the increasing support to the cause of renewable energy.
Pelosse added that it was further evidence of the narrowing differences between the oil producers and consuming countries in the pursuit of renewable energy.
