Work begins on Qapco’s Mesaieed plant

Plant will produce 300,000 metric tonnes of low-density polyethylene annually.

Construction work on the QR2bn ($549,000) Qatar Petrochemical Company’s new low-density polyethylene plant in Mesaieed Industrial City began on Monday.

The plant will produce 300,000 metric tonnes of low-density polyethylene a year, adding to Qapco’s existing 400,000 output, the Peninsula reported.

The new plant is set to be completed by the end of 2011, the paper reported.

Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani laid the foundation stone at a ceremony on Monday.

Uhde, part of the ThyssenKrupp Group, was awarded the engineering, procurement and construction contract in June this year.

“Launching the LDPE-3 plant today is, no doubt, a value-added expansion project, which marks another milestone in Qapco’s history of achievements,” Abdullah bin Hamad Al Attiyah, the Deputy Premier and Minister of Energy and Industry, said.

“Such projects have greatly enhanced the economic position of Qatar.”
