Oman has taken the decision to ban social ceremonies at mosques, halls and other public places as the sultanate strives to curb the spread of the omicron coronavirus variant.

The Supreme Committee in charge of tackling the Covid-19 pandemic announced that weddings and funeral ceremonies in mosques, halls and other public places will be prohibited “until further notice”.

In a statement posted on the Oman News Agency website, it said the decision “was prompted by the non-abidance of some individuals in society to the previous decisions endorsed by the authorities concerned on organising social ceremonies and the pertinent conditions to be observed, including having two-dose vaccination, wearing face masks, maintaining physical distance and operating within limited capacity (50 percent).”

It comes as neighbouring UAE tightened restrictions in the run up to the holiday period. As part of the new measures, all venues hosting events during Christmas and New Year will be limited to 80 percent capacity.

Attendees will also need to show both a green status on the Al Hosn app and have a negative PCR test that is no older than 96-hours.
