The Dubai Financial Services Authority (DFSA) has issued a warning about a lottery scam that uses its name to dupe people into thinking they’ve won $1 million.

In statement on its website, the DFSA outlined details of the fraudulent scam which uses false documents purportedly issued by the DFSA.

The perpetrators of the scam claim that the named person on the document, which carries the logo of the DFSA, “is a bonafide winner of the Emirates Lottery Foundation promo”, which the document says entitles them to receive $1,000,000.

In order to claim the funds, the scam says the named person must pay an advance fee for a “Funds Clearance Certificate” to gain access to the ‘Emirates Lottery Foundation Promo’ funds.

The DFSA has clarified that the ‘Emirates Lottery Foundation Promo’ does not exist in Dubai or the UAE and that it does not get involved in any lottery, and does not approve or authorise any transfer of lottery funds.

The DFSA also points out that it does not charge any payment fees, in relation to the transfer of funds and does not issue ‘Funds Clearance Certificates’.

“The name and purported signature of a former employee of the DFSA has been used without authority to add legitimacy to the scam,” the DFSA statement said.

“The DFSA strongly advises that you do not respond to any communication regarding the “Emirates Lottery Foundation Promo”, and under no circumstances should you send any money to the perpetrators of the scam.”
