The husband of the woman executed for stabbing a US teacher to death on Reem Island has reportedly gone on trial accused of plotting a series of terror attacks in the UAE.
The unnamed Emirati husband of Alaa Al Hashemi, dubbed the ‘Reem Ghost’, appeared on Monday at the Federal Supreme Court in Abu Dhabi to face seven terrorism charges, 7 Days reported.
Al Hashemi was sentenced to death for stabbing Romanian-born Ibolya Ryan, a mother of 11-year-old twins, in the toilet of the Abu Dhabi shopping mall.
The supporter of ISIL and Al Qaeda was also convicted of planting a bomb outside the home of an Egyptian-American doctor on the Corniche, sending money to Al Qaeda in Yemen and spreading information online to harm the UAE.
The Dubai newspaper cited prosecutors as saying the man had planned to carry out terror acts, including bombing Yas Marina Circuit and Ikea on Yas Island. He was also allegedly plotting to carry out attacks on tourist buses on the Corniche and also attack an American base in the country.
The court was reportedly told that he planned to assassinate a senior figure in the UAE government and had tried to join ISIL.
He also faces charges include manufacturing explosives and accessing terrorist and prohibited sites to learn how to make explosives, and giving financial support to Al Qaeda, 7 Days added.
The case was adjourned until next month.
