The Times launches Middle East awards

The UK newspaper will honour the region’s best print and online media journalists.

UK newspapers The Times and The Sunday Times plan to launch an awards competition for journalists in the region, a senior editor said this week.

“We see our Middle East awards as a way to make a positive contribution to the region. There is a lot of talent here that needs to be nurtured and rewarded. We are happy to play a supporting role in this,” said The Times’ Saturday editor George Brock.

The Times Middle East Journalism Awards will be judged by an independent panel, and are open to people who work in print and online media in the region.

The competition will recognise excellence in a number of categories, including outstanding work in political, business and current affairs reporting, local and international reporting and lifestyle, arts and feature writing.

It will also recognise sports writing and investigative reporting, editing, commentary and analysis, and photography and design.

There will also be awards for overall excellence and journalist of the year.

Organisers said they are looking into setting up a special work-study award for the best young journalist, which would allow a newcomer to spend time working in The Times newsroom in London.

The announcement follows the move earlier this month by owner News International to have both newspapers printed out of Dubai.

From May 21, international editions of The Times and The Sunday Times have been printed and distributed in Dubai priced at Dhs7 and Dhs15 respectively.
