Majid Al Futtaim-owned Carrefour is celebrating ‘Plastic Free July’ by promoting the use of its reusable juco bags with offers and rewards, and limiting plastic bags across its stores.
The initiative aims to drive more sustainable shopping habits among customers. Carrefour is offering a 33 percent discount on its durable juco bags during the month.
However, the supermarket giant will reward customers who bring their own bags or purchase reusable ones with bonus 5 SHARE points. Free fruit and vegetable bags will be given for spending over AED40 in that section.
Carrefour to remove plastic bags in July every Wednesday

Every Wednesday in July, starting July 3, Carrefour will completely remove plastic bags from stores. The retail giant will also mark International Plastic Bag Free Day.
“At Majid Al Futtaim, we recognise our responsibility as a trusted retailer to take active steps towards reducing plastic consumption, especially single-use plastics. With over 80 thousand customers entering our stores daily, we see a significant opportunity to positively impact our planet and encourage sustainable lifestyles for future generations. This Plastic Free July, we are embarking on a bigger plastic-free journey to drive awareness and inspire positive change,” Samar Elmnhrawy, Senior Vice President of Sustainability at Majid Al Futtaim Retail said.
The efforts align with the UAE’s single-use plastic bag ban introduced in Dubai in June. Since then, Carrefour has seen a 70 percent reduction in single-use plastic usage.
“We hope to create tangible results that shift customer attitudes towards more sustainable shopping behaviour for a greener future,” she said.
Through initiatives including a recycling scheme with BEEAH and Sparklo, Majid Al Futtaim Retail has collected over 185 tonnes of recyclables, preventing over 1,140 tonnes of carbon dioxide emissions.
Carrefour remains committed to a plastic-free future and empowering customers to make greener choices through its ‘Choose Better’ programme.
