Meydan applies finishing touches for Dubai World Cup

Work nears completion at $2.7bn project ahead of world’s richest race – official.

Work at the $2.7bn Meydan Racecourse, the world’s largest, is on track for full completion in time for the Dubai World Cup on March 27, a senior executive said on Monday.

“With the new roads and flyovers in place, we’re now putting the finishing touches to key VIP areas,” Meydan commercial director Mohammad A Nasser Al Khayat told Arabian Business.

“That includes set ups for the Elton John and Santana concert stage, plus lighting and sound as well as the final dress rehearsals and set ups for the opening ceremony spectacular, which is set to be an amazing visual and audio montage of history, culture – and the best moments we’ve captured of the Dubai World Cup.”

The Dubai World Cup is the world’s richest horse race, with a purse of $10m. Eight races will be run in total.

The Roads and Transport Agency (RTA) announced on Sunday that three bridges providing direct access to the Meydan grandstand from Meydan Road had been opened.

The 60,000-strong capacity grandstand had its soft launch at the end of January, and has played host to a number of races and concerts during the Dubai International Racing Carnival.

“Gates [for the Dubai World Cup] open at noon on March 27, so we have a lot planned and in store for guests to be entertained and for them to have a truly unforgettable experience here at Meydan,” Al Khayat added.
