India ranked third globally in facing cyberthreats, with a whipping 314 percent surge in malware threats in the week leading up to Christmas, a latest market report said.
India had a threat rate of 24, which is 91 percent higher than the global average, the report by Surfshark Antivirus said.
Portugal and Thailand topped the list of countries in terms of the most cyberthreats received during the week.
The most common threats in India have been heuristic and trojan, each accounting for about 30 percent of the threats found.
Europe was the most affected region by cyberthreats since mid-October.
“The holiday shopping season leading up to Christmas is not only beneficial for the retailers, but for cybercriminals too,” according to Nedas Kazlauskas, antivirus product owner at Surfshark.
“People searching for gifts and deals online for huge discounts during the period are more likely to click on suspicious links, download malicious files, and infect their devices,” according to Kazlauskas.
