WhatsApp reveals major updates lined up for users

WhatsApp users will be able to soon lock chats, edit messages and use new emojis in the upcoming update

Meta-owned instant messaging service WhatsApp will roll out new user-friendly features in its upcoming update.

Here are some of the features WhatsApp users can expect:

New WhatsApp features

WhatsApp will soon be able to lock chats and keep them hidden, in a bid to enhance user privacy.

Users will be able to use the multi-selection feature, which has been launched for WhatsApp for Windows beta.

This feature enables users to select multiple messages within a conversation and then choose to delete or forward them all at once. It can be accessed by clicking on ‘Select’ within the context menu of a conversation, and users can then select multiple messages.

This feature will save time and effort since earlier users had to select messages one by one and delete or forward them individually.

Secondly, for some beta testers on Android and iOS, WhatsApp is launching a new feature called approve new participants in group settings.

This feature will enable group administrators to manage how the approval of new members works in their groups. With this feature, when the option is enabled, anyone trying to join a group will be subject to approval by an administrator.

Group admins will now be able to approve or reject new participants when they join the group, even if they have used a group invite link.

Thirdly, WhatsApp is rolling out 21 new emojis to some beta testers for Android. These emojis can now be sent directly from the official WhatsApp keyboard, and users will no longer need to download and use a different keyboard to send them from the latest Unicode 15.0.

WhatsApp is also rolling out a new push name within the chat list feature on iOS beta. With this feature, beta testers will see push names within the chat list instead of phone numbers every time they receive a message from an unknown group member.

The messaging platform is also working on a new text editor for its drawing tool on iOS beta.

The new text editor will allow users to easily switch between different fonts by simply tapping one of the font options available above the keyboard. Also, users will be able to change text alignment to the left, centre, or right, and change the text background colour.

All these features are currently under development and are expected to be released in a future update of the application.
