Airbus has completed production of the final A300 freighter, which has since been delivered to logistics heavyweight FedEx.
The aircraft manufacturer has received 821 orders for the A300/A310 since its launch in May 1969, with over 630 of the models currently in service around the world. FedEx is amongst the most loyal customers for the aircraft, currently operating in excess of 120 A300 and A310 aircraft.
“Delivering the last A300 was an emotional moment and natural evolution in the Airbus family. We are proud to be handing over this final A300 to such a long-time customer and partner, as FedEx is a true reference in the air cargo market,” said Charles Champion, vice president customer services, Airbus.
“The global Airbus team will ensure continued long-term support for this great aircraft, which will see reliable service for many, many years, as we further develop our excellent relations with FedEx,” he added.
The support programme has been set in place to enable operation of the last aircraft until its retirement from service, with half of the current fleet expected to be in service beyond 2025.
“Time has proven that the A300s and A310s were excellent choices for our fleet,” said Jim Parker, senior vice president of air operations, FedEx Express.
“They have given us a great return on investment and proven to be reliable, all of which increases our ability to serve customers. We look forward to continuing our longstanding and important relationship with Airbus, and will continue to evaluate new developments in the Airbus product range as they become available,” he added.
Last January, Airbus launched the A330-200 freighter in response to growing demand for more efficient aircraft with greater range and capacity at lower operational costs.
