Dubai Airports, the operator of the Dubai International Airport (DXB), has completed rehabilitation of its northern runway – amidst expectations of massive traffic during summer.
An Emirates double-decker plane, the A380, bound for Amman was the first aircraft to depart from the reworked runway, which was closed down for 45 days.
“The northern runway rehabilitation project was a key strategic move by Dubai Airports and its partners in the aviation community to invest in the infrastructure at DXB,” Dubai Airports chief executive officer Paul Griffiths said in a statement.
One of the busiest airports in the world, DXB recorded traffic of more than 13.6 million passengers in the first quarter of the year.
“We are delighted to report that some elements of the project were delivered ahead of schedule, allowing us to fully prepare to a return to dual runway operations at the world’s busiest airport on time,” Griffiths added.
The operator is expecting to see an influx of travellers during the summer season, as well as towards the end of the year because of the upcoming World Cup in Qatar.
More than 400 engineers and experts, as well as thousands of personnel, worked “around the clock” to reconstruct the 4.500-metre central strip of the runway, the company said in a statement.
