Dubai-based Emirates has confirmed it exempts overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) holding overseas employment certificates from travel tax and airport terminal fee.
Last week, Philippines Labour Secretary Silvestre Bello III wrote to their local civil aviation authority to exempt OFWs from paying these taxes and fees under the presidential decree Number 1183 and Republic Act Number. 8042, or the Migrant Workers and Overseas Filipino Act of 1995.
“Emirates complies with all relevant legislation within the Philippines,” an airline spokesperson told Arabian Business.
“Overseas Filipino workers who book flights with Emirates, and hold a valid overseas employment certificate are entitled to a Philippines travel tax and terminal fees exemption, which is processed at the time of ticketing or can be claimed at the airport prior to departure,” the spokesperson said.
Bello III, in his letter, said that while some OFWs were refunded the fees at the airport prior to their departure, most of them were not refunded because of lack of awareness about this privilege or lack of time to process their claim for refund.
His letter was also sent to Etihad, Qatar Airways, Gulf Air, Saudi Airlines and a number of other global airlines.
