The Dubai Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) has awarded a contract to enhance access to Mall of the Emirates and improve surrounding roads, the Dubai Media Office revealed on Sunday in a statement.

The project, valued at AED165 million, is part of Dubai’s ongoing efforts to upgrade its road infrastructure.

The plan includes constructing a 300-metre bridge on Sheikh Zayed Road, widening the ramp at Umm Suqeim intersection, and improving 2.5 km of surface roads around the mall.

The initiative aligns with directives from Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice President, Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai, to continue improving the road infrastructure to meet urban development and population growth, and under the follow-up of His Highness Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, Deputy Prime Minister and Minister of Defence, the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), in coordination with Majid Al Futtaim Group.

“The project involves the construction of a 300-metre bridge on Sheikh Zayed Road with a single lane, providing direct access to the Mall of the Emirates parking lots for motorists coming from Abu Dhabi and Jebel Ali. Additionally, the current ramp at Umm Suqeim intersection will be widened southward by improving the intersection to facilitate the movement of vehicles from Umm Suqeim Street to the existing bridge leading to the mall’s parking lots,” Mattar Al Tayer, Director General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA said.

“Further works include improving the surface roads extending 2.5 km around the Mall, developing three signalised surface intersections, modifying the bus station at the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station, converting the street next to Kempinski Hotel from one-way to two-way, and enhancing pedestrian and cycling lanes. These improvements also cover paving, lighting, traffic signals, rainwater drainage system, and landscaping works,” he added.

The improvements will also modify the bus station at the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station and convert a nearby street from one-way to two-way traffic.

Al Tayer also explained that travel times for motorists coming from Umm Suqeim will be slashed from 15 minutes to 8 minutes, thereby enhancing traffic efficiency and safety on the roads surrounding the Mall.

The project includes upgrades to pedestrian and cycling lanes, as well as improvements to paving, lighting, traffic signals, and drainage systems.

Mall of the Emirates, which opened in 2005, attracts over 40 million visitors annually. It houses 454 stores, 96 restaurants and cafes, and entertainment venues including Ski Dubai. The mall is directly connected to the Mall of the Emirates Metro Station via a pedestrian bridge.
