Saudi ports have recorded an over 16 percent jump in cargo handling in June this year to reach 27.1 million tonnes, compared to 23.4 million tonnes in June 2021.
The developmental works launched by the Saudi Ports Authority (Mawani) to enhance the operating performance and upgrade port capabilities have led to the surge in cargo output last month, SPA reported.
The general cargo volumes at the ports have seen a 55.7 percent increase to reach 7.95 million tonnes, while the liquid bulk cargo posted a 31.8 percent jump to 15.5 million tonnes in June.
The dry bulk cargo handling, however, registered a decline of 6.9 percent to 3.9 million tonnes last month.
The container throughput gained 5.5 percent to hit 642.3 thousand TEUs last month, compared to 608.8 thousand TEUs in June 2021.
Transshipment throughput at 244.6 thousand TEUs was 4.2 percent higher this June.
As much as 1.6 million tonnes of food volumes were processed across the Kingdom’s trade hubs last month.
Coinciding with the Hajj season, passenger traffic improved to 79,000 last month, an increase of 79.28 percent.
The country’s ports also unloaded a total of 990,000 cattle heads last month.
