NEOM reveals massive railway network connecting The Line, OXAGON

A new high-speed railway in NEOM, Saudi Arabia will connect the megaproject’s Oxagon with The Line. A contract worth $1.5 billion between Webuild and its joint-venture partner Shibh Al Jazira Contracting Company (SAJCO) was signed for the same.

The railway, which spans 57 kilometres, is aimed at linking NEOM’s centre for advanced and clean industries, with 170-kilometre-long futuristic city.

NEOM, which is one of the kingdom’s key giga-projects, is designed as a blueprint for sustainable urban living.

NEOM’s upcoming development, The Line, will not have conventional roads or cars and will accommodate up to nine million people within a small area of 34 square kilometers.

NEOM aims to power the project with 100 percent clean energy from renewable sources such as solar, wind, and green hydrogen.

Webuild, known for its experience in constructing high-speed railways and challenging industrial projects, has been awarded a contract to design and build the majority of the Connector, a railway that will enable train speeds of up to 230 kilometers per hour.

This includes the construction of civil works for two high-speed and two freight railway tracks, as well as viaducts, road bridges, and rail and road underpasses.

The joint-venture agreement is split 70/30 between Webuild and its local branch Salini Saudi Arabia, and SAJCO, and is expected to generate over 4,000 jobs in the Saudi market.

Webuild has been working in the region since 1966, initially focusing on hydraulic works in Mecca, Jeddah, and Riyadh. Since then, the company has constructed more than 70 health centers, as well as the Al Faisaliah District Redevelopment Project and the Kingdom Centre in Riyadh.

Fisia Italimpianti, a subsidiary of Webuild, built the Shuaibah III Expansion II IWP desalination plant, which provides water to over one million residents in remote areas of Mecca and Taif.

This contract marks a significant achievement for Webuild and its partner, as it showcases the company’s expertise in high-speed railway construction and commitment to sustainable development.

Additionally, the project will promote sustainable infrastructure development and job creation in the Saudi market.
