A ‘death-defying’ 360-degree rooftop pool may soon make its debut in Dubai following “promising” talks, according to its designer.
The 600,000-litre pool, conceived by Sussex-based Compass Pools, is designed to allow visitors to “float” 200 metres in the air.
Concept images on the company’s website so far show the pool installed of a hypothetical 55-storey “Infinity London” tower, with swimmers overlooking the British capital’s skyline and the River Thames.
According to Compass, the pool is made from cast acrylic rather than glass, as the material transmits light at a similar wavelength to water so that the pool will look clear. To access the pool, swimmer will go through a rotating spiral staircase base, similar to those used on submarines.
Designer Alex Kemsley said that although London would be his original preferred location, he has since entered talks for a project in Dubai.
“We are in very early stage talks but they are promising,” Kemsley told Arabian Business. “A pool like this in the Dubai heat would be perfect.”
Other features of the pool include a built-in anemometer to monitor wind speed, and a computer-controlled management system that ensures the water stays at the right temperature and doesn’t get blown out of the pool down to the streets below.
“When we designed the pool, we wanted an uninterrupted view, both above and below the water,” Kemsley said in a statement on the Compass Pools website.
“Swimming in the SkyPool at the Shard, it’s quite a weird feeling to have helicopters flying past at your level, but this pool takes it a step further.
“Pop your goggles on with a 360-degree view of London from 220 metres up, it really will be something else, but it’s definitely not one for the acrophobic,” he added.
