Passengers using Dubai Airport’s Terminal 3 will soon experience a new shift in travel procedures, as biometrics and facial recognition technology are set to replace traditional passport checks, according to a report by Khaleej Times.

Adel Ahmed Al Redha, chief operating officer at Emirates announced, the report said, that by November or December of this year, passengers will be able to check-in and board their aircraft using their biometric identity.

Major General Obaid Muhair bin Suroor, Deputy Director General of the General Directorate of Residency and Foreigners Affairs (GDRFA), confirmed this transformation, stating that a new system will be implemented in November at Terminal 3.

Dubai advances seamless biometric travel

Passengers will rely on biometrics to complete all required procedures, and electronic gates will be replaced with smart gates to ensure a seamless travel experience, the report said.

Dubai Airports has been working on this project for several years, harnessing the latest biometric technology to create a touch-free travel journey for passengers.

This innovative approach will use travellers’ facial recognition and fingerprints as their primary identity verification methods, promising smoother and faster airport processes.

However, officials have highlighted the importance of data sharing between airports to expedite passenger flows.

Sheikh Ahmed bin Saeed Al Maktoum, Chairman and Chief Executive of Emirates and Group, stressed the need for collaboration among countries to streamline passenger entry and exit procedures.

Al Redha also pointed out that customer demand for reduced interaction calls for better integration of passenger information across all touch points.

He advocated for increased use of facial recognition technology to make passengers’ identities the key to their travel experience.

Miguel Leitmann, Co-founder and Group CEO at Vision-Box, the report said, further highlighted that biometrics and facial recognition have become the new standard, offering a secure and efficient way for travelers to navigate airports and ports.

Major General Obaid said that technology will replace human involvement in various roles, such as monitoring and analyzing processes, at ports and airports.

While challenges remain, the aviation sector is increasingly looking to technology as the solution.

Al Redha highlighted the importance of embracing automation, with the goal of relying on 90 percent technology and just 10 percent human interaction for future operations.
