The global and regional demand for electric vehicles (EVs) is increasing steadily. While Tesla stands out as a prominent player in this sector, numerous other automotive brands have also entered the market with electric and hybrid vehicle offerings. For drivers contemplating a change, the fundamental question is: What motivates the shift?

The UAE has taken significant steps to promote the adoption of electric vehicles in the country, introducing various initiatives in recent years. These include dedicated parking spaces, toll exemptions, and free charging services. As the host country for COP28, the UAE remains committed to sustainability and eco-friendly transportation solutions, leading to a growing interest and adoption of electric vehicles.

According to a recent survey by General Motors and Morning Consult, there is an increasing interest in EVs in the UAE and Saudi Arabia. The survey findings indicated a notable level of awareness among residents, with 95 percent in the UAE and 93 percent in Saudi Arabia acknowledging all-electric vehicles.

Here are some things you might want to consider while purchasing an electric vehicle:

Government incentives

The UAE government has rolled out a series of incentives to promote the adoption of electric vehicles. From waived registration fees to reduced toll charges and dedicated parking spaces, these incentives aim to make EV ownership not only environmentally responsible but financially attractive as well.

For instance, most malls have dedicated electric vehicle parking spaces. For motorists, this translates into significant cost savings and an added perk of convenient parking options.

Charging infrastructure

One crucial aspect of evaluating the purchase decision of electric vehicles is the availability and accessibility of charging infrastructure. While the UAE has been actively expanding its network of EV charging stations, it’s essential to assess whether the charging infrastructure is well-developed in your area of residence or work.

It is recommended to evaluate the proximity of charging stations to daily routes and ensure they are conveniently located.

Driving patterns and range anxiety

Amid rampant range anxiety, assessing this alongside general driving patterns can be crucial determining suitability for electric vehicles.

Electric vehicles come with varying ranges, and it’s important to evaluate whether the range of the EV aligns with daily driving needs. Factors such as commute distance, access to charging stations, and the need for long-distance travel are some considerations.

Earlier this year, in an exclusive interview with Arabian Business, Neil Lines, General Manager at Audi Al Nabooda said, “Range anxiety is real, and in accepting that, our teams are fully conversant with how to manage the accompanying questions from customers.”

“I personally drive an e-tron GT,” a model from Audi’s electric range, “my daily drive equates to around 90KM – much higher than the average in the UAE – so I am a great example of how Audi EV can fit around a lifestyle,” he said addressing these concerns.

Environmental impact

As the world grapples with the impact of climate change, the UAE is actively promoting sustainable practices. One of the primary drivers of the increasing demand and encouragement towards electric vehicles is the reduced environmental impact as compared to fuel-driven cars.

The use of EVs undoubtedly leads to a reduction in carbon emissions and eventually lower air pollution.

For those who prefer the advantages of both fuel-driven cars and electric vehicles, there are several hybrid vehicles available on the market for various budget considerations.

The consideration to purchase an electric vehicle in the UAE can be based on several factors, however, as the UAE continues to prioritise sustainability and eco-friendly transport solutions, the interest and adaptation of EVs is expected to surge.

Earlier this year, Dubai’s Roads and Transport Authority (RTA) announced that taxis in the city are expected to be fully eco-friendly by 2027. This means that all Dubai taxis will provide services using hybrid, electric and hydrogen-powered vehicles.

At the time of the announcement, Mattar Al Tayer, Director-General, Chairman of the Board of Executive Directors of the RTA, said, “The plan to transform taxis into environmentally-friendly vehicles translates the directives of Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Vice-President, Prime Minister of the UAE, Ruler of Dubai to optimise energy usage and promote environmental sustainability in the UAE.”

According to global revenue projections, the EV market is expected to see growth to around $90 billion annually by 2030, a significant increase from the current revenue of $10 billion in 2023.
