The Qatar World Cup has kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony at the Al Bayt Stadium in Doha.

The Qatar World Cup has kicked off with a spectacular opening ceremony at the Al Bayt Stadium in Al Khor.

Before the first ball is even kicked a stunning light, sound and entertainment show enthralled a global television audience of hundreds of million as the world looks to Qatar.

Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani addressed the crowd as part of the opening ceremony. which featured video segments depicting the history of Qatar and live narration from US actor Morgan Freeman, music from global superstar BTS singer Jung Kook and appearances from mascots past and present.

The high-energy show was attended by members of Qatar’s Royal family, Saudi Arabia’s Crown Prince Mohammed bin Salman Al Saud, FIFA dignitaries and broadcasters from all corners of the world.

World Cup opening ceremony shows are the traditional curtain-raiser for FIFA’s premier football competition. The ceremony in Qatar took place over seven acts and featured Qatari tradition with worldwide culture. It featured tributes to all the 32 competing teams, previous FIFA World Cup hosts and event volunteers.

Jungkook of K-pop boy band BTS was joined by Qatari singer Fahad Al-Kubaisi during the ceremony.
