Michael Hwang holds one of the most powerful positions in Dubai, as the Chief Justice of the Dubai International Financial Centre Courts, an independent judiciary that has the power to settle civil and commercial disputes from both local and global firms. He was appointed in June 2010 and has overseen a significant increase in the number of cases being brought to the courts, as its prestige continues to strengthen internationally.
Hwang, who hails from Singapore, has also served (between 2000 and 2003) as the commissioner of the United Nations Compensation Commission, a body formed under the UN Security Council to assess claims against Iraq arising from the first Gulf War, among various other prestigious legal bodies. He was one of the first Senior Counsels to be appointed to the Supreme Court of Singapore.
