Moroccan-born Nawal Al Soufi has earned so much more than the monikers of ‘the refugee helper’ and ‘Lady SOS’ for her outstanding work in saving the lives of 200,000 Syrian migrants as they attempted perilous journeys across the Mediterranean Sea to Europe. She made herself available to the refugees around the clock and was swift to arrange rescue missions during their most arduous and life-threatening challenges.
Al Soufi was honoured by Dubai Ruler Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum as one of the joint winners of the Arab Hope Maker for her impassioned humanitarian achievements using her ‘SOS phone’.
She says: “The phone is part of my life and means the world to me when I know that they are safe.”
