American electric car manufacturer Tesla opened its first retail store and service centre in Dubai in July 2017 on Sheikh Zayed Road. The 17,000 square foot space boasts an online design studio where customers can order the vehicles. In November 2018, Tesla also opened a temporary showroom in Dubai’s Mall of the Emirates in a bid to bolster its presence in the city.
The 220 square-metre showroom remained open until February 2019 and displayed Model S and Model X Tesla vehicles to allow customers to learn about the company’s products in an ‘experimental’ environment, according to the company. Among Tesla’s customers in Dubai is the Roads and Transport Authority, which beefed up its fleet to 125 electric vehicles last year. In order to encourage customers to drive electric cars, the Dubai government installed over 200 charging stations across the city.
