A man of vision and dynamism with a determination to succeed, Dr. Thumbay Moideen is recognised for the various achievements to his credit.
Born on March 23, 1957, Mangalorean by birth, Moideen, a third generation entrepreneur, was raised in a traditional family with a business background. Today, his name is synonymous with professionalism and positive approach. Taking to business at the tender age of 21 years, he demonstrated his business acumen from the very start.
In the year 1998, he established the Thumbay Group. Under his dynamic leadership, the group went on to achieve tremendous growth, and in the process, provided a means of livelihood to hundreds of families over the last decade.
Moideen had forayed into medical education and healthcare services in, when there was no existing set-up to cater to the needs of the students to pursue higher education in medicine and healthcare sciences in the private sector.
Moideen was the first expatriate to be invited by the rulers of Ajman to start a medical college in UAE. Thus, Gulf Medical University took shape which soon became a destination for medical education not only for local students, but to students from over 86 countries.
Today, the institution is a name to reckon with in the region and stands out on par with some of the best medical institutions in the world. The result of Moideen’s initiatives and vision have taken medical education to a greater level and has resulted in over 2,000 students graduating and presently working across 60 countries or pursuing specialised studies in some of the top international universities in different parts of the world.
Moideen has been the first Indian to be invited to UAE by the Rulers of Ajman to set up a medical college in 1998. He is one of the pioneers in the fields of higher education and healthcare in the country by setting up a medical college offering programmes “to both boys and girls of all nationalities and the first private teaching hospital in the country.”
The impact of which is evident from the fact that the university attracts students from over 86 nationalities. Gulf Medical University (GMU) is listed in Asia’s Top 100 Private Educational Institutions, given by World Consulting and Research Corporation (WCRC).
GMU has also established state-of-the-art Centre for Advanced Biomedical Research & Innovation (CABRI). Over 2,000 students have graduated from the university and they are working in different countries all over the world. Thumbay Group offer various scholarships to deserving students. The institution has provided scholarships of more than AED60m over the last decade.
