Qatar-based television station Al Jazeera was one of the first major media outlets to invest heavily into app production. Back in 2009, the channel launched its English-language app for $2.99, although it is now free. As a result, users can now download apps for both Al Jazeera English (AJE) and Al Jazeera Arabic (AJA) onto most types of smartphone. So, for example, the iPhone/iTouch apps offer subscribers access to Al Jazeera’s 24-hour news coverage for free. The quality of the stream is adjusted depending on whether users have access to either a Wi-Fi or a 3G network. Al Jazeera also offers free live streaming on its BlackBerry and Android apps, and provides live updates via a news widget for Samsung Wave and Nokia owners.
Available from: Android Market, BlackBerry App World, App Store, Samsung Apps and Ovi.
