A trained physician, Al Zawahiri is the founder of Egyptian Islamic Jihad (EIJ). Under his leadership, the cell merged with Al Qaeda in 1998. He was indicted for his alleged role in the 1998 bombings of US embassies in Tanzania and Kenya.
