Batelco may well have had its bid to acquire 25 percent stake in Saudi Zain knocked back, but it has still been an expansive twelve months for the Bahrain Telecommunications Company.
As competition increases at home Kaliaropoulos is charged with expanding operations into new markets such as South East Asia and Africa and has a considerable warchest for acquisitions. Since joining Batelco in June 2005, Kaliaropoulos has set up regional operations in Saudi Arabia, Jordan, Kuwait, Yemen and Egypt. The telco now has almost 10m customers.
Prior to joining Batelco, Kaliaropoulos held various senior executive roles in the telecoms industry with SingTel Optus Business in Australia, StarHub in Singapore, Clear in New Zealand and BT Asia Pacific in both Singapore and Australia.
