Former minister of state for antiquities affairs, Zahi Hawwas love affair with Egypt’s historical sites is now legendary. He worked alongside Otto Schaden during the opening of Tomb KV63 – the first intact tomb to be found in the Valley of the Kings since 1922. He has also spearheaded efforts to return antiquities now residing in foreign museums to Egypt. Hawwas resigned his position after thieves broke into the Egyptian Museum during the unrest earlier this year. In all, he has claimed that dozens of sites across the country have suffered looting.
