If Ronaldo Mouchawar was not a household name in Dubai already, he is now, following the news in March that his e-commerce website Souq.com is being snapped up by Amazon in a deal worth a reported $650m. The move means Amazon can bring its operations to the Middle East for the first time, with the potential to transform the future of internet retail in the region.
Aleppo-born entrepreneur Mouchawar co-founded UAE-based Souq.com alongside the Jabbar Internet Group’s Samih Toukan and Hussam Khoury in 2005.
Souq.com, whose name is inspired by the Arabic word for ‘marketplace’, has grown to become the largest e-commerce retailer in the Middle East.
