A former editor of the
Daily Telegraph
, Martin Newland launched the first government-owned UAE newspaper to win plaudits for the quality of its journalism.
With a circulation of more than 60,000, Newland has managed to tread the fine line between breaking stories and sticking to the agenda of the paper’s state-run owners, the Abu Dhabi Media Company.
Prior to becoming editor of the
Daily Telegraph
, he worked at the
Catholic Herald
from 1986-89; before becoming a reporter and home editor at the
Daily Telegraph
from 1989-98.
Newland then became deputy editor on the
National Post
, a conservative Canadian daily founded in 1998 by Conrad Black.
He was educated at Downside School, the Royal Military Academy Sandhurst, and Heythrop College, University of London, where he took an MA in theology.
