Emad Hajaj

Designation: Hajjaj is one of the most, if not the most, renowned social and political cartoonists in the Arab world.

Hajjaj is one of the most, if not the most, renowned social and political cartoonists in the Arab world. Born in Ramallah in 1967, Hajjaj received his elementary education at a refugee camp in Jordan. He was granted his first award in an elementary school competition and his first cartoon was published in the university newspaper in 1987.

Hajjaj graduated from Al Yarmouk University in Jordan in 1991 with a BA in Fine Arts, majoring in graphic design and journalism.

After graduation, Hajjaj went to work for a number of local newspapers in the kingdom, including Akher Khabar, Al Ahali, Al Raseef, Al Bilad, Al Mustaqbal, Al Dustour, and Al Rai.

In 1992, he started working for the London-based Al Quds Al Arabi newspaper, after which he moved to work for Al Dustour. The following year, Hajjaj left to work for the leading Jordanian daily Al Rai, but a controversial cartoon led to dismissal in 2000. For the next four years, Hajjaj worked for Al Dustour daily newspaper, and is now contributing to Al Ghad newspaper, and Al Quds Al arabi in London.

Hajjaj has held exhibitions in Amman, Beirut and Dubai and published a number of caricature books. He is a member of the Jordan Press Union, the cartoonists and writers Syndicates CWS in USA. He’s also a receiver of the 1st award for the best cartoonist in Al Hussein journalist creativity Award and won the Arabic Press Award 2006 in Dubai, Best Published Cartoon in Arabic Media in the year 2005 for his cartoon The Crying Arabic Camel.
