Hussein Madi is one of the prominent artists who lit the fuse responsible for the exploding art scene in the Middle East in the past decade. His works have won critical acclaim in exhibitions around the world and a spot on our list of powerful people in the region this year.
Renowned for his paintings, sculptures and engravings, Hussein Madi hails from a small village town at the foot of Mount Hermon in Southern Lebanon. He began his studies in Beirut and continued to flourish during subsequent studies at the Academia di Belle Arte and at the Academia di San Jacomo in Rome. During his studies in Italy, he conducted advanced research into the cultural heritage of the Arabian world, and particularly of Egypt.
His works have been displayed in international, collective exhibitions from the mid 1960’s to the present day. He has won a multitude of prizes including the coveted Sursock Museum 5

Salon Prize for Painting in 1965, the 8
th
Salon Prize for Sculpture from the Italian cultural center three years later, and the First Prize for Engraving, Citta di Lecce, Italy in 1974.
His success led to taking on the role of President of the Association of Lebanese Artists from 1982 until 1992. This artist has also given back to his community by teaching art at the Lebanese University for thirteen years, from 1973 until 1986.
The publication ‘The Art of Madi’, distributed in May 2004, provides a sample of his most famous works.
