Power can rest with the young, but it can also lay in the hands of the most experienced, as is the case with 81-year-old Fairouz, born Nouhad Wadie’ Haddad. The singer is the voice not of a generation, but of an entire population, both young and old.
Soon after she began her career in the 1950s she was dubbed the “Jewel of Lebanon”. Almost unimaginable today, she toured North America in the early 1970s and gathered a whole new audience. From Australia to the UAE to Switzerland to Canada to Mexico and to Argentina, Fairouz has influence over millions. Well into her 60s, she was performing to sold-out venues in Las Vegas.
