Lina Attalah is the chief editor of Mada Masr, an independent Egyptian online newspaper founded in June 2013 by former journalists of Egypt Independent, which shut down in April that year.
Having acquired more than 38,000 followers on Twitter, Attalah’s voice is both well respected and much listened to.
She studied journalism at the American University of Cairo and during her career has covered notable events in Egypt, including the recent uprisings. As well as writing for numerous publications including Reuters, Al Masry Al Youm and Cairo Times, Attalah has worked as a radio producer and campaign coordinator for the BBC World Service trust.
The launch of Mada Masr is part of Attalah’s – and her colleagues’ – fight against restrictions on journalism in Egypt.
