Utilities is a labour intensive industry, a fact that shows in Saudi Electricity’s ranking. With a giant payroll of 27,601 staff, per capita productivity is a mere $2,764. Still, CEO Al Barrak has still managed to keep the state-controlled power producer’s profits moving in the right direction. Second-quarter profits rose 50 percent to $293.3m on higher demand for power and lower operating expenses in the Arab world’s largest economy. Power demand in Saudi is set to increase eight percent annually, as the national grid struggles to keep pace with population growth.
