Empowering Emirati women for a sustainable future through collaboration

The role that women play in achieving comprehensive sustainability is both pivotal and multifaceted

By harnessing women's unique perspectives, skills, and experiences, we have the opportunity to create a society that is not only balanced but also harmonious and thriving

In a world at a crossroads, where sustainability has taken centre stage, the UAE’s Year of Sustainability emerges as a beacon of hope and action. This year’s Emirati Women’s Day theme, “We Collaborate for Tomorrow”, reflects the nation’s resolute dedication to tackling the challenges of sustainability head on.

As we step up our collective endeavour, it is essential to acknowledge that diversity and inclusion, particularly through the empowerment of women, are the cornerstones of a truly regenerative approach to sustainability.

The role that women play in achieving comprehensive sustainability is both pivotal and multifaceted. Their contribution spans across sectors, encompassing everything from economic growth to environmental stewardship.

By harnessing women’s unique perspectives, skills, and experiences, we have the opportunity to create a society that is not only balanced but also harmonious and thriving. The potential of Emirati women to drive positive change is immeasurable, making their inclusion not just an ethical imperative but also a strategic one for steering us towards a sustainable future.

The resonant theme of this year’s Emirati Women’s Day, “We Collaborate for Tomorrow”, aligns perfectly with the UAE’s vision for sustainability, underscoring the unwavering commitment of the country’s leadership to finding innovative solutions to pressing sustainability issues.

Collaboration on a national scale has the power to nurture and sustain gender balance. The synergy between governmental bodies, private enterprises, and civil society creates an environment where women’s empowerment becomes a shared aspiration, enabling them to flourish in all aspects of life.

The annual recognition of the accomplishments of Emirati women on August 28 holds profound significance. By celebrating their achievements and aspirations, we kindle a flame of inspiration that burns in the hearts of women across the UAE.

This acknowledgment not only demonstrates that obstacles can be surmounted and dreams achieved, but it also propels the younger generation to reach for the stars, dismantling stereotypes and fostering a more inclusive society in the process.

Despite substantial strides in promoting gender balance within the UAE’s social fabric, there remain challenges that demand our attention. While more women are participating in diverse fields, their integration in traditionally male-dominated industries requires concentrated effort. Creating opportunities in these sectors and removing barriers will ensure that the immense potential of women is fully realised.

The insurance industry stands as an apt example of the gender representation challenge. As of late 2020, according to S&P Global Market Intelligence, there were just seven female CEOs in the US insurance sector. Among publicly held insurers, about 23 percent of executives and officers were women.

While progress has been made in breaking down barriers, there is still room for improvement. Initiatives that actively support women’s leadership and provide mentorship opportunities can be instrumental in reshaping the landscape. Noteworthy is the NLGIC Group’s commitment to championing women’s leadership within the sector, thereby paving the way for more women to rise beyond perceived limitations.

By empowering Emirati women and embracing their diverse contributions, we are building a future that is brighter and more resilient for everyone

My story offers a living testament to the transformative power of national initiatives in empowering Emirati women. I and many of my colleagues embody the remarkable potential and unwavering determination of Emirati women in their pursuit of excellence. Working in an empowering environment not only provides avenues for professional growth but also nurtures self-assurance and innovation.

As we celebrate Emirati Women’s Day during the Year of Sustainability, it is imperative that we chart a path defined by inclusivity and equity. By empowering Emirati women and embracing their diverse contributions, we are building a future that is brighter and more resilient for everyone.

Through collaboration, appreciation, and steadfast dedication, we lay the foundation for a society that thrives sustainably in every facet – socially, economically, and environmentally. This isn’t just a vision for tomorrow; it’s the reality we are forging today.
