Abu Dhabi to raise sustainability targets, reduce groundwater use in new 4-year agriculture plan

The new strategy also outlines a future roadmap for establishing sustainable food systems and measures to address the sector’s challenges

Abu Dhabi

The Abu Dhabi Agriculture and Food Safety Authority (ADAFSA) has launched its four-year strategic plan, which targets, among other things, increasing agricultural sustainability rates to 66 percent and reducing the use of groundwater in agriculture by 500 million cubic metres during the period.

The new strategy also outlines a future roadmap for establishing sustainable food systems and measures to address the sector’s challenges.

Announcing the new long-term plan, Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of the Presidential Court and Chairman of ADAFSA, said the plan also aimed to promote efficient partnerships with entities operating in the agriculture and food production sector.

To achieve these objectives, the strategy has recommended several initiatives to ensure dependence on technology and artificial intelligence and build the capacities of the sector, Al Nahyan said.

He also lauded the efforts of ADAFSA’s employees who have accomplished numerous achievements in terms of ensuring the sector’s sustainability.

The launch of the strategic plan was attended by Dr. Mugheer Khamis Al Khaili, chairman of the department of community development – Abu Dhabi, and Saeed Al Bahri Al Ameri, director-general of ADAFSA.

Al Ameri said the authority’s new strategy underscored the keenness of the UAE’s leadership to support the sector and ensures the success of the Abu Dhabi Government’s efforts to diversify the economy.

ADAFSA is monitored by Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed and aims to achieve self-sufficiency, which reached 84 percent in nine select food products in 2021, he added.

The new strategy plan aims to motivate the agriculture and food production sectors and increase its contribution to the emirate’s GDP.

It is also aligned with the Abu Dhabi Government’s objectives to establish a knowledge-based economy and achieve sustainable agricultural development.
