UK Prime Minister Boris Johnson will resign as leader of the British Conservative party today, but will continue to serve as PM until autumn this year, the BBC reported. Johnson will make a statement later today announcing his resignation, a Downing Street spokesman added.
Following his resignation, a Conservative leadership race will take place during the summer, with a new PM selected for the party’s conference in October, the news agency added.
The PM has faced a turbulent week. On Wednesday, more than 40 ministers and aides quit Johnson’s government, a record for a 24-hour period.
On Wednesday, the premier had remained defiant with his team saying he intended to fill the vacant roles. But the exodus continued on Thursday morning, with two cabinet ministers quitting, alongside a slew of junior ministers, and Zahawi tweeting that the situation was “not sustainable.”
