The one day you skip work and your country’s Prime Minister happens to drop in.

That’s what happened to employees of the Dubai Land Department when His Highness Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum wandered unannounced into a completely empty office.

Dubai Media Office shared a video on its official Twitter account that showed the Vice-President and Prime Minister of the UAE and Ruler of Dubai during a series of surprise visits to government departments.

But it was Sheikh Mohammed who appears most surprised in the video when all he finds during one spot-check is an empty desk.

The 14-second clip shows Sheikh Mohammed walking through the office past at least six vacated chairs. He then stops at the desk before leafing through a book he had apparently picked up from the top of some office furniture.

“He certainly wanted to send a message,” said Mona Al-Marri, director-general of the government of Dubai’s media office, according to local media. “Timeliness starts at the top and we won’t go after employees when their bosses aren’t there.’’

The visits to service-oriented departments were aimed at “assessing their readiness to provide high-quality and timely services to customers”, said the Dubai Media Office.

Sheikh Mohammed started the tour at 7.30am and visited Dubai Municipality, Dubai Land Department and Department of Economic Development before reviewing facilities and services at Dubai International Airport.
