Tayem Hassan began his career on the small screen, starring in a range of Arabic TV shows including ‘Al Aar’, a social drama series set in Syria and directed by Rasha Sharbatji.
In 2007, Hassan starred in ‘El Malek Farouk’, an account of the eponymous ruler’s reign in Egypt during the 20th century. His performance was hailed as a success, despite initial doubts from the Egyptian public, which initially called for a countryman to play the role.
He has since broken the barrier into movies, with a starring role in the Egyptian film ‘Michano’, his first crossover into the Middle East’s largest movie market. In it, he played alongside Lebanese actress Nour and Egyptian actor Khaled El Sawi.
The film, in which Hassan played an architect with amnesia, won critical acclaim from critics and fans — so much so that Tayem has had to publicly apologise to a demanding Egyptian public for scaling back his television appearances in favour of pursuing his promising movie career.
