Nigel J. Smart PhD, President of SMART Pharmaceutical Consulting and founder of Relationships and Lifestyles LLC, is a man of multitudes. He has assisted the Biomedical Advanced Research and Development Authority (BARDA) and the Department of Defense, where he helped develop vaccines in the wake of the War on Terror.
Since the beginning of his remarkable career, Smart has set himself apart from the crowd by standing vehemently against the tide of tradition and embracing change. His ability to successfully pull clients skyward arises from his own life’s ebbs and flows. “I don’t scare easily. Times have been scary, but I’ve learned emotional tools and techniques from the best mentors around to become antifragile. Nothing is beyond us as a people,” he explains.

Especially with the onset of revolutionary new forms of technology like artificial intelligence, it’s cardinal to be ahead of the curve. “And if we stay with our antiquated ways of doing things, we will never get there. His critically-acclaimed book, Lean Biomanufacturing: Creating Value through Innovative Bioprocessing Approaches, released in 2013 was the quintessence of his resilient leadership approaches. Written to optimise the pharmaceutical industry’s inefficient operations and their returns on investment, Smart wanted to contribute to the existing literature on the topic through a conversational and accessible read that anyone could learn from.
In 2021, he released Bouncing Back from Divorce with Vitality & Purpose: A Strategy for Dads in the aftermath of his divorce. A quick read to help fathers recovering from the trauma of divorce and separation, Smart once again put his experience over the last 30 years to use. “I’ve got to bring all of this to the rest of the world. Not only so people going through the same thing I did can bounce back, but so that they can bounce forward, and ultimately, skyward.” notes Smart.
More recently, he has written a contribution to the bestselling book The Unexpected Leader, where he wraps up his concept of Powerhouse Leadership, sparked by his unconventional perspective on the world which often results in gainful results.
Smart is now in the process of expanding his ideas in The Unexpected Leader and his storied life and career in pharmaceutical consultancy into a full-fledged book. As he concludes, “When you get thrown into the middle of chaos, what principles do you use to thrive in it?
