India is set to overtake China to become the world’s most populous country by the middle of 2023, according to data released by the United Nations.
According to a new United Nations Population Fund report, its population surpassed 1.428bn, slightly higher than China’s 1.425bn people.
The figures are equivalent to three million more Indians than Chinese people, according to the UN figures.

The burgeoning population will add urgency for Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s government to create employment for the millions of people entering the workforce as the nation moves away from agriculture jobs, said the Qatar News Agency.
With half the population under the age of 30, it is set to be the world’s fastest-growing major economy in the coming years.
