Dubai International Airport will see a renewed period of infrastructure expansion, worth $7.8bn over the next 10 years as it pushes to become the world’s largest airport.
In addition to Concourse 3, which will be completed next year, the airport is also adding Concourse 4 and an expansion to Terminal 2 (which will be completed by 2013).
In total, 675,000 sq m of floor space will be added to the airport, which equates to twice the size of Heathrow’s latest facility, Terminal 5, senior airport officials revealed on Wednesday.
Outside the passenger areas, a new taxiway will be built, alongside a 60 percent increase in the number of aircraft stands.
The plans also include a new dedicated baggage facility.
Concourse 4 will be dedicated to international airlines, while the existing three concourses on the south side of the airport will be dedicated to Emirates passengers.
The concourse will be connected to the existing Terminal 1 via an “automated people mover”.
It is expected to be opened in 2015.
Dubai Airports CEO Paul Griffiths said that the focus of the emirate’s aviation sector expansion would remain with Dubai International for now.
“We simply can’t build Dubai World Central fast enough to keep up with the growth of the airlines [Emirates and FlyDubai],” he said.
“As we have this fantastic facility, let’s maximise its use now.”
