Dubai’s transport authority announced plans on Monday to introduce express metro trains to slash travel times on selected routes.
The Roads and Transport Authority said four early morning Red Line express trains would be launched in October on a five-month trial basis.
The RTA said the fast trains would reduce travel time by up to 10 minutes.
Two of the express trains will to start from Rashidiya and the other two from Jebel Ali.
Each train will stop only at the most frequently used stations – Rashidiya, Emirates, Al Rigga, Union, Khalid Bin Al Waleed, Karama, Al Jafiliya, Emirates Towers, Noor Islamic Bank, First Gulf bank, Dubai Internet City, Ibn Battuta and Jebel Ali.
Adnan Al Hammadi, CEO of RTA’s Rail Agency, said: “The RTA always seeks to meet the needs of mass transit users by introducing new methods, alternatives and initiatives that help achieve its strategic objectives in serving the public.
“Express Trains are to commence operations before the start of the metro’s regular service as an added service to the current trips which start at 5.30am… This service option is set to reduce the trip time by 10 minutes,” he added.
Al Hammadi said passengers would be surveyed to discover the effectiveness of the new services.
“If both services prove successful, they will be applied on a permanent basis,” he said.
