Dell has unveiled its next generation Precision workstations; the Precision 690 and 490.

According to the firm, both workstations offer performance gains over previous models as they are capable of delivering up to 45% more speed on single-threaded applications and up to 155% on multi-threaded applications.

The Dell Precision 690-1KW features an Intel dual-core processor, memory scalability of up to 64Gbytes and a new serial-attached SCSI (SAS) disk (and can support up to five disk drives). On the graphics front, the 690 features an optional dual-graphics riser card that combines two nVidia SLI cards.

Like the 690, the Precision 490 also uses an Intel dual-core Xeon processor. The 490 offers up to 32Gybytes of DDR2 memory and provides support for SAS hard disk storage along with six slots for expansion. The Precision 490 also features a convertible chassis that can be deployed as a tower or desktop.

Pricing for the Dell Precision 490 starts at US $1475, while the Dell Precision 690 is available from $1680.
