Abu Dhabi will deploy AI drones, self-driving vehicles, a 3,000 taxi fleet and more to support traffic during Formula 1 Grand Prix celebrations.

The Integrated Transport Centre (ITC) has unveiled a comprehensive mobility plan to support the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, taking place from December 4–7.

The plan reflects ITC’s commitment to ensuring seamless transport operations for one of the world’s premier sporting events, while reinforcing Abu Dhabi’s status as a global destination for major events.

ITC confirmed that all necessary resources will be deployed in line with the highest international mobility standards.

Smart traffic management

Traffic operations on Yas Island will be managed through the Traffic Management Centre, which will control traffic signals and provide real-time updates to road users via variable message signboards.

“Road Service Patrol” teams will be deployed to support motorists and manage incidents, including providing fuel, changing tyres and recharging vehicle batteries.

Tow trucks will also be available to quickly clear broken-down vehicles to ensure road safety and maintain traffic flow.

ITC will introduce AI-powered drones to monitor traffic conditions, identify congestion and detect illegal stopping.

These drones will automatically record violations using number-plate recognition technology and relay information in real time to the control centre for follow-up.

Taxi parking and occupancy levels will also be monitored digitally to improve service availability and reduce waiting times.

All monitoring will be carried out in line with regulatory frameworks, ensuring safety and protection of privacy.

Autonomous vehicles

To highlight Abu Dhabi’s leadership in smart mobility, ITC will deploy a fleet of 15 autonomous vehicles throughout the event. These vehicles will operate on designated routes across Yas Island from 3pm to 10pm, transporting spectators between major access points near the race circuit.

The fleet will be monitored through ITC’s newly launched smart platform.

Visitors may also use the wider operational network of more than 30 autonomous vehicles, which connect Yas Island with Al Saadiyat Island, Zayed International Airport, Al Reem Island and Al Maryah Island via the TXAI and Uber apps.

Buses and taxis in Abu Dhabi

ITC has allocated 82 public buses to transport visitors and event organisers. The Yas circular bus service will connect Yas Mall (Tryano Gate) and the Warner Bros. car parks with the race circuit gates, Yas Island hotels and the entertainment district.

Approximately 3,000 taxis will be available across the event period, including both regular taxis and ride-hailing services such as Uber and Careem. Two designated pick-up and drop-off areas have been established within the race zone, with additional locations near hotels and firework displays.

A special event tariff will apply, and ITC will oversee taxi movement before, during and after the event.

Supervisors and inspectors from ITC and operating companies will be stationed throughout Yas Island to guide visitors to car parks, public bus stands and taxi areas.

Inspectors will be deployed to high-traffic zones to monitor movement in coordination with Formula 1 management and Abu Dhabi Police and resolve any challenges for spectators.

Major events in Abu Dhabi

Since the inception of the Formula 1 Etihad Airways Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, ITC has been a strategic partner alongside the organising committee, working closely with Abu Dhabi Police to deliver efficient transport operations.

These efforts are led by a highly qualified Emirati taskforce experienced in managing complex, large-scale events.

Beyond Formula 1, ITC supports numerous major events across the emirate, advancing Abu Dhabi’s wider economic and social development goals by providing an integrated, safe and efficient transport system that enhances quality of life for residents and visitors.
