Entrepreneurs of the Week: Ruchika and Shobhika Kalra, Wings of Angelz

Our latest Entrepreneurs of the Week Ruchika and Shobhika Kalra have started a social initiative to inspire UAE residents to help improve the lives of differently-abled people.

Wings of Angelz, a disability awareness group the Kalra sisters started in 2014, has already cooperated with some of the key organisations, such as the Roads and Transport Authority (RTA), to install 46 ramps in buildings and metro stations across Dubai.

Zomato, a restaurant discovery and food ordering app, has included a microsite for Wings of Angelz that will provide in-depth information about all restaurants in Dubai which have a ramp and are accessible for wheelchair users.

Furthermore, the group works closely with more than 100 organisations in Delhi, Bhopal, and Bangalore.

However, that is all just the beginning for Ruchika Shobhika. “We grew up in Abu Dhabi and consider the UAE our home. When we read about Dubai's vision to turn completely disabled friendly by 2020, we decided to give back to the country by doing our bit,” she says.

Speaking about their Ramp Day, which took place in Dubai on Friday, 29 January, Ruchika Shobhika adds: “As per the World Health Organisation, one in every 100 people is disabled.

“While there are many organisations working on several initiatives relating to the disabled, we realised that accessibility, a simple yet very important cause, is often missed out.

“We realised that sometimes by simply creating awareness of this cause, we will be able to bring about a massive change.”

Sheikh Hamdan bin Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, Crown Prince of Dubai, has launched ‘My Community’ initiative to establish Dubai as a fully-inclusive and differently-abled people friendly city by 2020.
