Dubai is open its new fish and vegetable market in Deira by August next year, according to Dubai Municipality.
Hussain Lootah, director-general of Dubai Municipality, told Gulf News that construction of the $73.2 million market is 48 percent complete.
“[It] will cope with the entire requirements of the community as a fish and vegetable market, as the civic body will provide best services ensuring the trade of fresh fish and healthy vegetables,” he told Gulf News.
Located opposite the Dubai Hospital in Al Hamriya, the new market is expected to become a tourist attraction, according to Lootah.
The current market, located near the Hyatt Regency Hotel on the Corniche, is already popular with visitors but the new market is expected to dwarf what’s there in terms of size and offering.
The new two-storey main building will include almost 150 fruit and vegetable stands, 63 shops for spices, more than 70 meat outlets, and over 50 supermarkets, in addition to 770 underground and 700 outdoor parking spaces.
The development will also see the construction of a 600-metre walkway and a pontoon for 65 boats bringing in their daily catch.
The new fish market is the first stage of the proposed regeneration of the 5km Deira Corniche, which runs from the mouth of the Dubai Creek close to the Sharjah border.
