Officials in Saudi Arabia have denied reports that they will begin to impose a nominal free on road users from 2020, according to local media reports.
In a statement to the state-run Saudi Press Agency, Ministry of Transport spokesman and ministerial advisor Yasser Al Misfir said that “the subject of imposing a toll on road use is still under study. It is awaiting completion and it will not be ready to be carried out till 2020”.
Additionally, the statement added that the Ministry of Transport “reserves its full right to take legal measures against anyone who publishes false information thereby harming the ministry.”
Various Saudi news outlets reported earlier that the ministry has set up teams to study the proposal ahead of a decision in early 2020.
According to Saudi officials, the Ministry of Transport is conducting five projects worth SAR 621 million ($165.59 million) that will contribute to road safety in the kingdom.
